This course is designed to advance the expertise, practical training, and hands-on experience of nurses interested in expanding their proficiency in counselling and psychotherapy across diverse healthcare environments.

This course utilizes counseling and psychotherapy methods, Cognitive intervention, Behavioural intervention, CBT psychotherapy theoretical frameworks to assist in behavior and mental health changes. Usually nursing incorporates some form of health counseling within the definition of nursing practice, and Structured Psychotherapy such as  Cognitive  Behavioural Therapy –CBT, can be done with individuals, families, and groups.

The course curriculum incorporates contents at a master’s level, ensuring an advanced and comprehensive educational experiences for nurses.

Prerequisites.

The nurse must be registered with their respective College of Nurses and their nursing association which provides malpractice insurance.

Course Duration

The course extends over one year and encompasses 750 hours, including online theoretical instruction and 450 practice hours involving direct client interaction within community settings. Nurses are required to submit live case studies and recordings of CBT therapy sessions—with clients’ consent—that detail the patient’s history, formulation, and treatment plan. Additionally, participants must complete clinical supervision under the guidance of an experienced nurse psychotherapist or a registered psychotherapist.

Upon completion of the program the Nurse Psychotherapist Certification, nurses  will be awarded with a certificate  and will be able to use the protected title CPN/ CNP – Certified Nurse Psychotherapist and a 3 year membership with the  Canadian Nurse Psychotherapist Association
